Areas Richmond Animal Care and Control Serves

Richmond Animal Care & Control provides pet adoptions and humane services for thousands of cats and dogs every year throughout the Richmond, VA community. All of our pets are vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Richmond Animal Care and Control's Adoption Process

Adopters are required to complete a written adoption application and meet with our adoption placement coordinator. Adoption fees cover the cost to spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip and test for heart worms (dogs) and FIV/FELV (cats).

Those interested in adopting an animal from RACC must visit our shelter in person to meet and interact with the animals. Adoption appointments are available daily, are scheduled no earlier than a day in advance and are animal specific. The shelter is open to the public Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00. Once a selection is made, the prospective adopter completes an application. The application is immediately reviewed by staff and will be approved on the spot unless the adoption staff feels this adopter and animal are not a suitable match. If the adoption is approved, the adopter pays the pet's adoption fee. If the animal is spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations, the adoption can be processed immediately! If the animal is not spayed or neutered, the pet is able to go home as a Foster-to-Adopt and the surgery is scheduled with one of our partner vet clinics. The adopter handles transport and the adoption is finalized after the pet is spayed or neutered. RACC staff will email the adoption package and mail hard copies.

Adoption fee - $150 puppies 4 months and younger, $100 all others
Cats and kittens may be adopted two for the price of one!
Pets age 9 years and older may be adopted for no fee with an approved application.

All City of Richmond, VA residents are legally required to purchase an annual $10.00 license for each pet owned.
